WHAT IS NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION?

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
A national movement of teachers and educational leaders setting standards for themselves to improve student learning, promote school reform and provide rigorous and challenging professional development.

National Board Certification is a voluntary certification which attests that teachers have reached a level of excellence in their field based on rigorous standards. The standards are primarily written for and by teachers and articulate exemplary teaching practices. The candidate’s task is to reflect upon the classroom, educational experience and knowledge and provide evidence of these standards through a series of performance-based assessments. NBPTS’ central policy statement, “What a teacher should know and be able to do,” is a premise on which Five Core Propositions were organized. They are:
......1. Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
......2. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
......3. Teachers are responsible for monitoring and managing student learning.
......4. Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
......5. Teachers are members of learning communities.
