Teacher Center

The UFT Teacher Center, now in its 34th year, is a comprehensive professional development program that promotes teacher excellence and academic achievement for all students.

The UFT Teacher Center operates throughout the five boroughs of New York City in some 150 school-based sites and numerous outreach locations.

The UFT Teacher Center offers members of the school community many opportunities to gain the knowledge and skills to support literacy in English language arts and the content areas.

The Teacher Center promotes research-based best practices in literacy and English language arts initiatives. Educators citywide are provided support through conferences and forums, credit-bearing graduate courses, in-service courses, citywide and borough networks and summer institutes.

Additionally, Teacher Center offers literacy-based and English language arts content-based professional development activities for the school community through paraprofessional support, parent workshops, and UFT Teacher Center site-based support.

The UFT Teacher Center provides members of the school community and educators of English language learners support through borough professional development opportunities, which include networks and Teacher Center site-based support. In addition, our English Language Learners conferences are designed to offer all educators,(K-12 including monolingual and ESL/bilingual) an opportunity to learn strategies that support and scaffold listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as content knowledge. This series of conferences are aligned with the latest research on English Language Learners and second language literacy development, as well as the New York State Learning Standards. Each conference relates current research connected to the conference topic to the design of model lessons with featured strategies for the various grade-bands (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12). Participants have opportunities to deepen their knowledge and share best practices in differentiating instruction for the wide variety of ELLs in their classrooms, including Students With Interrupted Formal Education, gifted and long-term ELLs.

The UFT Teacher Center offers a variety of professional development opportunities for educators of all grade levels and content areas to gain knowledge and skills to support the implementation of technology as an integrated tool that effectively enhances teaching and learning.

Through citywide networks, borough networks, summer institutes, and UFT Teacher Center site-based support, school community members are provided with opportunities to learn about the instructional use of technology in classroom practice that aids in the development of 21st- Century skills for educators and students while meeting the New York State Learning Standards and Performance Indicators.

Working with partners such as the Intel Foundation, New York Institute of Technology and the Verizon Foundation’s Thinkfinity.org, Teacher Center is dedicated to providing professional development to support teachers to know how, when, and where to integrate technology into instruction.

The UFT Teacher Center offers a variety of professional development activities that address areas of interest and importance for K–12 mathematics educators. These activities include summer institutes, borough-wide networks, and UFT Teacher Center site-based support. Additionally, annual citywide institutes and networks are provided. These series are aligned to the content and process strands of the New York State Core Curriculum in Mathematics. Instructional and classroom management strategies are modeled to help educators engage students, differentiate instruction and develop strategies that support problem solving and communication in mathematics.

The UFT Teacher Center provides opportunities for teachers and paraprofessionals to deepen their understanding of the science content in the New York State Science Core Curriculum. With the educational support of annual seminars, teachers learn to develop unit plans that correspond to the K–8 New York City Science Scope and Sequence, as well as the Core Curriculum, Grades 9–12. Teachers also learn instructional strategies for incorporating literacy and math into hands-on science lessons and units.

Additionally, The UFT Teacher Center collaborates with New York Hall of Science to provide professional development opportunities and educational practices to assist teachers and ensure that the science needs of all students can be met.

Additionally, each year UFT Teacher Center citywide special education seminars provide educators who teach students with disabilities in both self-contained and general education classrooms with opportunities to learn about the nature and needs of their students. Each seminar provides participants with an in-depth look at one aspect of learning disabilities and an understanding of the impact on student learning, behavior and social skills. Participants learn and practice instructional strategies that are designed to support the specific needs of their students.

New York State, along with 50 other states, territories, and the District of Columbia, has joined the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Governors Center for Best Practices (NGA) in the development of Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics.
