UFT SPRING COURSES
DEADLINE TO REGISTER -- February 11, 2009

CATALOG BY MAIL
The UFT Spring 2009 Course Catalog will be published and mailed to UFT members as part of the NY TEACHER newspaper on or about January 22nd. Copies will be available at UFT Headquarters at 52 Broadway, on the 18th floor and at all borough offices.

CATALOG ONLINE -
The catalog will be available for viewing online, on or about January 15, on our Web site http://www.uft.org/member/education/catalog/ and registration may also be conducted online by members of the UFT who have created a password and user ID

WHAT’S NEW IN THIS ISSUE?

  • Mercy College is now offering a new TESOL masters program.
  • NYIT is offering a new master’s degree in School Counseling/Guidance.
  • Sports Coaching Courses are now offered in Staten Island - by popular demand!
  • A special group of graduate-level courses, consisting of six sessions each, will be offered during Presidents Week and the Spring Recess, by Touro and Brooklyn College.



COURSE REGISTRATION

"T" courses are UFT/Teacher Center courses. UFT members may register online with a credit card. Non-members may download the coupon on page 2 of the course catalog and mail it in with their check or money order covering the $30 registration.

"E" courses are NYSUT/ELT courses. Register online with a credit card at NYSUT's secure website https://eltweb.nysut.org/iqweb, using a credit card to make the $100 deposit, which includes a $50 registration fee and cost of text. Registration may also be accomplished by mailing in the coupon on page 2.

NYSUT/ELT and Touro College Online courses are offered in two sessions, The first begins on Feb. 2 and ends on April 10; the deadline to register is Jan. 30. The second session begins on March 2 and ends on May 8; the deadline to register is Feb. 11. Participants are requested to call 1-800-528-6208 or visit the NYSUT website https://eltweb.nysut.org/iqweb.

TOURO’s ONLINE course, EdSE 650, open only to those in the Master of Literacy program, will run from March 2 until May 8. Register before the Feb. 11 deadline through NYSUT/ELT, as indicated above.

Most Spring courses begin the week of Monday, Feb 23. A detailed course calendar appears in the catalog.

NYSUT Special Continues!
Low tuition of $645 will include a $50 registration and the cost of required texts or manuals for NYSUT/ELT courses.
Books will be distributed at first class.

MANDATED WORKSHOPS FOR NEW TEACHERS

CHILD ABUSE RECOGNITION and REPORTING WORKSHOP

This workshop is a one-day, two-hour session and meets requirements for NYS certification. All workshops begin promptly at the starting times stated below.

New York State requires all teachers who are seeking initial or permanent state certification to take a workshop in how to recognize and report suspicion of child abuse. The workshop covers definitions of child abuse and neglect, warning signs and procedures to follow if you suspect that one of your students has been abused. New York State mandates that you must be present at the start of the workshop in order to receive the state certification.

The UFT offers this workshop to its members for a $10 fee. UFT members only may register ONLINE at www.uft.org using a credit card (Visa or MasterCard only). This workshop is open to non-members for a $25 fee payable by money order only. All fees are non-refundable.

UFT members only may also register by mail using the coupon on page 40 in the catalog, enclosing a $10 check or money order made payable to UFT/Child Abuse. Non-members may register only by mail, sending the coupon and a $25 fee, payable only in money order to UFT/Child Abuse.

EDUCATIONAL PATHWAYS FOR PARAPROFESSIONALS

The UFT Teacher Center and the NYSUT Education and Learning Trust have collaborated with Empire State College’s Harry Van Arsdale, Jr., Center for Labor Studies of the State University of New York (SUNY) to offer a unique, fully accredited program of study.

Designed specifically with paraprofessionals in mind, these courses, when satisfactorily completed, may be credited toward a degree at a college or university; used to meet state regulations; or simply taken to upgrade classroom skills.

Paraprofessional course information may be found in the Spring 2009 edition of the UFT newspaper, New York Teacher Educational Supplement, available at your local UFT borough office or online at www.uft.org.
