A Professional Development Project for UFT Paraprofessionals

Are you a paraprofessional who is interested in becoming a classroom teacher? Pathways to Teaching provides professional development support as you make the transition. Coaching Sessions

L.A.S.T. (Liberal Arts and Science Test: Short Answer)
A.T.S.-W. (Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written: Short Answer & Essay)

ELIGIBILITY: These coaching sessions are available to current and prospective New York City teachers who intend to take the Teacher Certification Examination on May 31 and July 12, 2008.

COACHING SESSIONS will address the test format; focus on successful test-taking techniques; examine critical-thinking strategies for short-answer questions; and provide participants with practice material.

NOTE: Non-members may register, but space is limited. UFT members are given preference. For questions regarding registration for Teacher Certification Examinations, call National Evaluation Systems at 1-413-256-2882.

COST: L.A.S.T.: $75 for two-day course
A.T.S.-W.: $75 for two-day course

ELIGIBILITY: These coaching sessions are available to current and prospective New York City teachers who intend to take the Teacher Certification Examination on May 31 and July 12, 2008.


COACHING SESSIONS will address the test format; examine organizing strategies for essay writing; help expand your repertoire of writing skills; and provide practice material.


NOTE: Non-members may register, but space is limited. UFT members are given preference. For questions regarding registration for Teacher Certification Examinations, call National Evaluation Systems at 1-413-256-2882.

(Note: To get the most benefit from this course, participants are urged to attend all sessions of the section they select.)

COST: $50 for five sessions

Mathematics Summer Institute for K-12 Educators

STEP UP to the MATH!

The Summer 2008 Mathematics Institute will:
  • Provide the beginning of a year-long study of geometry and measurement across grades K-8 and introduce the new, New York State Geometry Curriculum.
  • Continue to support all teachers in the use of the core mathematics programs, and the New York State Mathematics Core Curriculum.
  • Introduce strategies to differentiate instruction for all students (gifted, English Language Learners, and students with special needs).
Participants will:
  • Deepen their content knowledge of mathematics in the areas of Geometry and Measurement.
  • Examine the NYS Standards in Mathematics.
  • Learn about effective pedagogy in mathematics instruction (developing communication, problem solving, learning centers/stations).
  • Receive instructional resources for classroom use and a certificate of participation.
